George Carlo and Cell Phones

For those of you who do not know about George Carlo, please take a moment to read below.

‘ From 1993 to 1999 [George Carlo] headed the Wireless Technology Research program (WTR), a US$28.5 million research program, employing over 200 doctors and scientists, funded by the cellular phone industry that investigated the possible health effects of cellular phones. …

‘ This research program found evidence of health risks, including single and double strand DNA breakage, and formation of micronuclei, a marker for cancer.

‘ [A reviewer of his book writes:]

‘ “One look at the x-ray photos reproduced in the book, which show how radiation easily penetrates skulls, will give even the most impervious observer second thoughts.” –John J. Miller ‘ [1]

A citation to one of the early WTR articles is listed below. [2]

Mr. Carlo (with Martin Schram) penned a book entitled, “Cell Phones: Invisible Hazards in the Wireless Age.” A review follows:

‘ With news reports proliferating of the possible connection between brain tumors and cell phone use, Dr. George Carlo was hired by the cell phone industry in 1993 to study the safety of its product. In 1999 funds for Dr. Carlo’s research were not renewed, and the industry sought to discredit him. Undeterred, Carlo now brings his case to the public with a powerful assessment of the dangers posed by the microwave radiation from cell phone antennas—disruption of the functioning of pacemakers, penetration of the developing skulls of children, compromise to the blood-brain barrier, and, most startlingly, genetic damage that is a known diagnostic marker for cancer—as well as a presentation of safeguards that consumers can implement right now to protect their health.

‘ “.…the authors raise serious questions about the integrity of the cell phone industry and the FDA.”—San Francisco Chronicle

‘ “Extraordinarily informative…[a] captivating story….”—Publishers Weekly ‘ [3]

The review was edited since the first time I read it — I reproduce a portion of the old version here:

“[Carlo] made urgent recommendations to the industry, including a plea that cell phones not be marketed to children. In 1999, the [cell phone] industry quit funding the independent research directed by Carlo, investigated his private life, and began a whispering campaign that sought to discredit him.” [4]

It is worth noting that in recent years, more evidence has surfaced regarding the danger of cell phones, particularly to children. One 2008 study shows cell phone use increases the risk of brain cancer in children by five times. [5]

In my opinion, the side effects from electro-magnetic radiation are one of the “boulders on the path” to which I referred in a recent post.

Food for thought.
